Auxiliary battery

An extra battery used to run additional 12-volt equipment in a recreational vehicle.

Ball mount

Describes the part of a hitch system that supports the hitch ball and connects to the trailer.

Black water

A term for waste (sewage) from the toilet that is flushed into a holding tank in a recreational vehicle.

Boondocking

A term describing camping in a recreational vehicle without services (electricity, water or sewer) in a store parking lot or other parking area.

BTU

Stands for British Thermal Unit, a measurement of heat that is the quantity required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree F.

Bunkhouse

An RV area that includes bunk beds.

Camper shell

A removable recreational vehicle unit that fits into the bed of a pickup truck.

Caravan

A group of recreational vehicles traveling together.

Class A motorhome

A recreational vehicle with living accommodations built on or as an integral part of a self-propelled motor vehicle.

Class B motorhome

Also known as a camping van conversion. These recreational vehicles are built within the dimensions of a van, but with a raised roof to provide additional headroom. Basic living accommodations inside are ideal for short vacations or weekend trips.

Class C motorhome

A recreational vehicle with the living accommodations built on a cutaway van chassis. Typically, a full-size bed in the cabover section allows for ample seating, galley and bathroom facilities in the coach. Also called a "mini-motorhome" or "mini."

Another term used to describe a recreational vehicle.

Cockpit

The driver's area in a motorized recreational vehicle.

Converter

An electrical device for converting 120-volt AC power into 12-volt DC power. Most RVs with electrical hookups will have a converter.

Coupler

the portion of a trailer frame that attaches to the hitch ball of the pull vehicle.

Curb weight

The weight of a basic recreational vehicle without water in the holding tanks.

Deluxe Cabins

KOA Deluxe Cabins have a bathroom, comfy beds and many convenient amenities. Most have kitchens, climate control and separate bedrooms - this is luxury camping. Most units sleep up to six comfortably. There are approximately 2,200 of these units throughout the KOA system in North America.

The term for a front engine diesel motor home.

Diesel pusher

A motor home recreational vehicle with a rear diesel engine.

Dinette

A booth-like dining area within a recreational vehicle. The table often is dropped down in order to convert the area to a bed.
